Progressive thinking about DaaS

It's great to see some extremely thought provoking ideas emerging about DaaS and cloud-hosted desktops.  There seem to be more and more really smart people thinking (and blogging) about this concept and its potential.  Here are two recent examples that caught my attention:

IT is Changing: Virtual Desktops and Cloud Computing

This is post by Michael McKay of MJM Consulting in Ottawa.  What I like about this article (in addition to the fact that it mentions Desktone by name :^>) is Michael's focus on the "not-so-obvious" impacts of DaaS, such the organizational effects for both end users and IT, the value-added services opportunity and even the potential impact on countries with restrictive Internet access polices.  Clearly he's spent some time thinking about how DaaS might reshape the client computing landscape.

Red Hat buys Qumranet, adds gasoline to the spreading VDI bonfire

This post was written by Carlton Vogt, a guest contributor to Dana Gardner's blog and does not mention Desktone.  Carlton talks about the postitive impact DaaS/VDI will have on Microsoft's business in terms of preserving the existing Windows client application model, whereas others (including Michael) think that VDI could have a negative impact on the giant if it doesn't respond quickly enough to changes in the marketplace.  He also talks about the prospect of ad-supported DaaS and even having it be part of a new triple (or in my mind, quadruple) play offered by telcos or cable providers.

I thought that DaaS was generally taken to mean "Data as a Service"... is what you're talking about Platform as a Service? I understand that you've bought the domain and everything, but...

No, it's not. Our DaaS stands for "Desktops as a Service". Unfortunately, this is a case of different IT concepts vying for the same acronym real estate (see the following post by Nick Carr on this very topic http://www.roughtype.com/archives/2008/01/a_little_too_mu.php)

Also, in our model, the customer brings the domain, desktop OS images, applications and all the relevant licensing and maintains the storage of their user data. Our service provider partners are responsible for the virtual desktop hosting infrastructure (everything below the VMs), including the servers, storage, networking, hypervisor and our platform.
